What do I need to hire a vehicle?
To be over 21 years of age, hold a valid driver’s licence and a full credit card (check out our insurance page if you don’t hold a full credit card for more alternatives)

Do you accept overseas Driver’s licences?
We accept full valid driver’s licences from most countries. International driving licences are also accepted. We do not accept learners, restricted or ‘P Plate’ licenses and all licenses must be in English or be accompanied by an English translation.
Do I get a refund if I return the car early?
In the event that you cancel or void the agreement, or return the vehicle earlier than stated in the rental contract, no refund applies. Vehicle hire charges are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Can we have more than one designated driver?
Absolutely, there is just a $34.50 charge for any extra drivers.
What happens if I breakdown?
We are very confident about the quality of our vehicles and our team of mechanics consistently do everything they can to make sure you have no problems. But vehicles do break down and we are prepared for this. Just give us a call on 0800 538 973 at any time of the day or night and we will look after you.
What do I do if I have an accident?
Firstly, look after any people involved. Call 111 for an Ambulance if you need to. We can repair a car but humans are a bit out of our league.
Secondly, ensure the vehicle is safely off the road (if possible).
Thirdly, we will ask that you do not admit liability in any circumstance, if you are unsure always obtain a police report that will help our insurance company to gauge who was at fault.
Always take down the full details of any other vehicle involved and the drivers contact details (very important if they are not insured) and take lots and lots of photos!
All accidents must be reported to Letz the day they happen, you will also have to complete the Incident Report in the yellow folder and hand it in to Letz. We do not guarantee to replace the vehicle if you are liable for the accident.
What happens if I return the car later than originally arranged on my contract?
If you are running late for returning the vehicle, we will give you one hour’s grace. After a second hour late you will be charged an hourly rate up to 5 hours where a full day’s rental will be charged.
Can I drive anywhere?
Please do not drive our vehicles off road or onto any New Zealand beaches, this includes 90 mile beach even though we know you want to – you will not be covered by our insurance.
Can I take the car across the Cook Strait?
Please do, this means that you will get to experience the extreme diversity of New Zealand landscape and trust us if you have time it is so worth it.
Do you do one way hires?
Yes, between Auckland and Christchurch, anywhere else is on request and all one ways are subject to availability.
Do you have an out of hours service?
Yes, if you wish to collect your rental vehicle between 6pm and 8am, you will need to complete a presign form and return it to us. Our office is handily located near the Naumi Hotel (used to be the Hotel Grande), which is on the Yellow Hotel Shuttle Bus route ($6 per person, children under 12 years are free) from both the domestic and international airports, which means that you can pick up or drop off your car to us anytime as the Hotel has a 24 Hour reception. Your vehicle will be ready for you to collect at the Hotel. An after hours service fee of $45 applies. You can also return your vehicle after hours at the Naumi Hotel and take the Yellow Hotel Shuttle bus back to the airport. The $45 after hours service fee also applies.
When booking our staff will take you through the information that we need prior to the hire and the pickup/dropoff procedures and charges.
Can we smoke in your vehicle?
For the comfort of all our customers we request NO SMOKING in all of our vehicles. A valet charge of $200 minimum will apply.
Can we take our pet in your vehicle?
This is on a request basis as some of our vehicles are pet friendly. If the vehicle is returned soiled with fur, etc then a valet charge of $200 minimum will apply.
What happens if I receive a fine during my hire?
All drivers are responsible for fines received. When fines are received, a Statutory Declaration is prepared & sent back to the relevant authority nominating you as the driver of the vehicle. An administration fee of NZ$50.00 is charged for this process and will be debited from your credit card at the time of processing. This administration fee in no part covers the cost of the fine you have received. The issuing authority will redirect the fine to you, at which stage you can proceed with paying the authority direct.
Do I need to pay for toll roads?
Yes, you will need to pay for any toll roads that you use on your trip. Most toll roads have extensive signage detailing where and how to pay. All drivers are responsible for any toll road fines. If you do not pay for your toll road prior to leaving New Zealand then we will charge the fine through to your credit card and charge an administration fee of $25. We will also email you a copy of the paid toll road fine so that you are aware of the money taken.
Why are your rates not advertised on your website?
We have a complex rate schedule with multiple options available for vehicles, depending on duration of hire and distance travelled. Our staff can ensure you get the correct information for your particular hire. Rates are subject to change. We aim to respond to all booking enquiries within a 10 hour period, less if they are received during office hours.
Do you hire baby seats?
We can organise a baby or booster seat for your rental vehicle at a cost of NZD$35.00 per rental, per seat. Please send us your child’s age and weight once you have made your booking so we can ensure that the correct seat is supplied
Do you hire GPS Navigation Systems?
Yes, these are available at a cost of $10 per day, less if the hire is 10 days or more.
Will the tank be full on pick up?
At Letz we operate on a level to level basis with fuel, we endeavour to make sure that the tank is at least 1/2 full on pick up. The fuel level is noted on our pick up video and on your contract and we only expect you to return the vehicle at the same level. If you return it with less then we will calculate the difference and charge this to your credit card.
